The Wood Quarters (1816) was constructed by American soldiers after the War of 1812 and served a variety of functions over the years. The building was used as a soldiers’ barracks, officers’ quarters, temporary hospital, laundress quarters and storehouse. In 1889, the building was remodeled into the post canteen. Here off-duty soldiers relaxed while playing billiards, reading magazines, enjoying sandwiches or sipping a mug of beer, “Schlitz of Milwaukee,” for five cents a glass. Be sure to take in the amazing view offered on the porch!
The Officers’ Wood Quarters is also the temporary theater for Fort Mackinac while the Soldiers’ Barracks is under construction.
